free advertising for your GNLD business

When you meet someone you haven’t seen for ages, and you’re catching up on all that’s happened, what do you say when she asks ‘Are you still with XYZ, Fred?’

If you’re developing a part-time GNLD business, this question is a great opportunity to do a little free advertising for yourself. Notice the word ‘little’, and don’t be tempted to fill Mary’s ears with a 10-minute speech just ‘cos you’re all fired-up about your new business. Sow the seed, and wait to see what happens.

You could say ‘Yeah, Mary, I’m still with them, but about six months ago I started a little part-time business with a fantastic health and nutrition company called GNLD, and I tell you what, it’s going really well. If it carries on like this, I’ll soon be able to stop the job at XYZ and work for myself full-time from home.’

That took about 20 seconds to say. Fiddle about with the words until they’re right for you, and then learn your ‘advert’, so it just rolls off your tongue.

You’ll get any number of replies. Here are some possibilities…

  • ‘That’s interesting, Fred. Did you watch the big match today?’ (Meaning: it’s not interesting at all. Let’s change the subject. That’s OK for you, too. You now know you’d be wasting your time if you tried to pursue GNLD with Mary. You don’t want every Tom, Dick, and Mary. You want to work with people who are looking for a business, or for great products: you’re not interested in trying to convert everyone to your way of thinking.)
  • ‘What’s GNLD, Fred?’ (Meaning: I could be interested. Give Mary a very brief synopsis of GNLD, not the whole 49-year success story!)
  • ‘I’m really interested in health, too.’ (Meaning: I’d like to find out more about GNLD. Well, Mary, I’m sure you’d be interested in GNLD. I’d be happy to meet you sometime for a coffee, and we could have a brief chat, if you like. Here’s my card with my latest contact details. How can I get in touch with you, Mary?)
  • ‘Actually, Fred, I’ve been thinking about starting a business of my own. The job I’ve got seems to be going nowhere, and I’m really fed-up with all the back-biting. How does GNLD work?’ (Let’s meet for a coffee, Mary, and I can show you what I’ve been doing in GNLD. How about Thursday or Friday, Mary? Would you prefer morning or afternoon? 4.30pm OK? Great! We’ll chat about it then, Mary. I can see Joe over there. You remember Joe. He’s just changed jobs. Let’s go and see how he’s getting on…)

There are millions of possible replies, but you get the idea. Your brief verbal advert will provoke a response, and you can react appropriately.

(Tip: Use the name, of the person you’re talking to, a lot in your conversation. It will help her feel like a long-lost friend, and she’ll be more inclined to listen to what you have to say.)

Even if Mary isn’t interested, she may tell someone else about you. It’s not only free advertising, it’s word-of-mouth advertising – the most powerful advertising there is.

Keep it light. Keep it short. Have fun.
