home business

Millions of people around the world have found a home business to be a rewarding and fun way to make extra money. Some to make just that bit extra for family treats. Some to make enough to give up the 40 hour drudge. Some to become very rich.

Although the financial rewards can be stupendous, many people don’t start a home business for the money. Often the desire is to do something worthwhile… to contribute to society for the benefit of other people… to give and receive recognition for a job well done.

Active seniors often face retirement, not with the expected joy of being able to please themselves at last, but with a sense of foreboding. It’s okay if you want to rust in peace at the seaside, but many retirees don’t want to just fade away. They plan to carry on working. Not doing the same job for less pay, but taking on a new, exciting challenge.

At the other end of the scale, many young people just starting their careers have seen their parents’ desperate attempts to juggle job, time, stress, and family commitments, only to end up broke. And they know the pension-pot will be empty by the time they get to it. They’re not afraid of work, but it needs to have a purpose, a meaning. And unlike their parents’ job-for-life mentality, they’re prepared for multiple sources of income.

If we were to describe the benefits of our home based business in one word, it would be: freedom.

Freedom to choose the hours we work. Freedom to choose with whom we work. Freedom to decide when we go on holiday, and for how long. And we now work together, which gives us a really great sense of combined achievement.

With our workat home business, there’s no travelling to the office, and that’s a real boon, too. After a hard day, an hour in nose-to-tail traffic was the last thing I needed. Looking back, I can imagine how grumpy I must have been when I got home!

The Monday-morning-blues and TGIF-syndrome are gone, too. Now we greet each day with enthusiasm, knowing we have the freedom to choose what we do with the day.

Heide no longer has the stress of office politics, and I don’t miss the stress of dental practise. I loved the clinical work, helping my patients, but am pleased to be rid of the government interference and the mountains of paperwork that are part of modern professional practise.

For us, it started when we were nearing our planned retirement date. We were looking for something to keep our minds and bodies active, at the same time continuing to make a worthwhile contribution to society.

And we didn’t want to downsize, spending the rest of our lives thinking of ways to tighten our belts. That would be no fun at all. But the figures in the pension brochures that looked really huge 40 years ago, now didn’t seem so wonderful any more! We knew we had to do something to supplement our annual income.

Deciding to start our home business is one of the best decisions we’ve made. We’re having fun helping others on the road to their freedom, and meeting lots of interesting people. We’re also developing a valuable, worthwhile asset. Unlike the dental practice, we can leave our home business to our children and grand-children one day, and that’s a very satisfying thought, too.
